Deepwater Horizon memorial sculpture. 'Eleven', a sculpture by Jason Kimes, remembers the workers killed when BP's Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded and caught fire on 20 April 2010, in the Gulf of Mexico. Over the next three months, some 4.9 million barrels of oil welled up from the seabed into the Gulf of Mexico. The oil well was capped on 15 July 2010. The spill caused extensive damage to wildlife and local fishing industries. This memorial was made by welding together around 2000 steel disks for each human figure. It was installed for two years from 2016 at the corner of Elysian Fields Avenue and Dauphine Street in the Marigny neighbourhood of New Orleans, USA. In August 2018, they were moved to St Rose, Louisiana, USA. Photographed on 22 April 2018. | |
