Sanctorius' clinical 'thermometer', 1612. Santorio Santorio (1561-1636). Italian physician known as Sanctorius invented his air thermoscope or clinical 'thermometer' in 1612. One end, which was globe-shaped, was placed in the patient's mouth and the other in a bowl of water. The serpentine thermometer was graduated with glass beads. | |
