Elmina, Gold Coast, West Africa, c1890. Elmina was the first important European port on the Gold Coast. It was founded by Portuguese in 1482 and became a major centre for the gold trade. In 1957, the Gold Coast became the first sub-Saharan country in colonial Africa to become independent, and was renamed Ghana.
