Apollo 15 lunar surface exploration,July 1971. US astronaut James Irwin at the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) at the end of the Apollo 15 first lunar surface extravehicular activity (EVA-1). At left is the Laser Ranging Retro Reflector (LR-3) on top of the Lunar Module (LM)'s modular equipment stowage assembly (MESA). Apollo 15 was the fourth manned mission to land on the Moon. The lunar lander (LM) 'Falcon' touched down in the Hadley region of the Moon on 30 July 1971. Astronauts David Scott and James Irwin spent a total of 18.5 hours outside their spacecraft,carrying out three exploration trips (EVAs) with the Lunar Roving Vehicle (used for the first time on this mission).
