Amphipods inside Aurelia limbata jellyfish. Close-up of hyperiid amphipods inside the dome of a brown-banded moon jellyfish (Aurelia limbata). Jellyfish are free-swimming aquatic invertebrates that are related to the sea anemones and corals. Amphipods are small aquatic crustaceans, which form part of the zooplankton. These amphipods are hyperiid amphipods, from the suborder Hyperiidea. Most species of hyperiids are parasites or predators of salps and jellyfish. This jellyfish is found in the northern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Photographed in the western Pacific Ocean, in the Sea of Okhotsk. | |
