Racial segregation in the USA. Separate toilets for 'white' and 'colored' workers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA. Segregation of this nature was made illegal by the Civil Rights Act of 1964. These toilets are on the site of the X-10 Graphite Reactor, a nuclear reactor that was built during World War II as part of the Manhattan Project. It was constructed from 1943, began producing plutonium in 1944, and shut down in 1963. Photographed in the 1940s. | |
