Ancient Assyrian bas relief of the river Tigris showing the shipping of building materials in a coracle, on the right, to the city of Nineveh, modern day Mosul, Iraq. The relief is dated to 700-692BC and is part of a series depicting the construction of Sennacherib's palace displayed at the British Museum. On the left is log raft atop which is an inflated animal skin. Such skins were used both singly or in a array underneath a raft. Coracles are an ancient form of boat still used in various countries. Construction comprised stretched animal skins over a wooden framework. A four-thousand-year-old cuneiform tablet exists, supposedly dictated by the Mesopotamian god Enki to Atra-Hasis, with instructions on how to build a round ark"", or coracle." | |
