Solstice sunrise at Egyptian temple at Karnak. Sun rising above the entrance pylon and shining down the main axis of the Precinct of Amun-Re at Karnak during the winter solstice. This temple is located on the West Bank of the River Nile, near Luxor, Egypt. It mostly dates from the second millennium BC, during the Middle Kingdom and New Kingdom periods of Ancient Egypt. Egyptian temples were often aligned facing east, designed to be used to mark astronomical events such as the solstices. The solstices occur twice each year around 21 June (summer solstice) and 21 December (winter solstice), coinciding with the longest and shortest days of the year. | |
