Nicotine addiction enzyme therapy. Molecular model of the enzyme nicotine oxidoreductase (NicA2, surface model and ribbons) binding to a nicotine molecule (yellow spherical carbon atoms) that is complexed with a flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) molecule (white spherical carbon atoms). NicA2 is a bacterial flavoenzyme, which catalyzes the first step of nicotine catabolism by oxidizing S-nicotine into N-methyl-myosmine. It has been proposed as a drug to treat nicotine addiction because of its substrate binding affinity. Nicotine is the addictive chemical found in cigarettes and similar products, obtained from sources such as the tobacco plant (Nicotiana tabacum). | |
