Zika virus particle infecting a cell, computer illustration. Zika virus is an RNA (ribonucleic acid) virus from the Flaviviridae family. It is transmitted to humans by Aedes sp. mosquitoes. The virus (yellow) infects skin cells via the cell membrane. It releases its genetic material, RNA (yellow-green), which hijacks the cell's organelles to make more copies of the virus (mitochondrion: blue-green; Golgi apparatus: magenta; smooth endoplasmic reticulum: pink; rough endoplasmic reticulum: orange). New viruses are released and enter the bloodstream causing zika fever, a mild disease with symptoms including rash and joint pain. In pregnant women the virus may cause foetal microcephaly (small head) leading to miscarriage, developmental disorders, or death soon after birth. | |
