Cherokee Strip land run, 1893. Land runs in the USA were the allocation of land for people to build their homes on, established by the Homestead Acts. Prior to 1895, the process was operated on a lottery-like basis with land sold who whoever was able to reach the designated plots first and stake their claim. At the official starting point, thousands of people would line up and race to stake their claims. This land run started at noon on 16 September 1893, with around 100, 000 people taking part. At stake were 40, 000 homesteads covering 6 million acres of what was formerly Cherokee land in Oklahoma Territory (later Oklahoma, USA). | |
