IceCube neutrino detection event follow-up, illustration. IceCube (completed 2010) is an international high-energy neutrino observatory in the ice below the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. Neutrinos are elementary particles that are very difficult to detect and study. On 22 September 2017, IceCube Neutrino Observatory alerted the international astronomy community about the detection of a high-energy neutrino event (IC170922). Over twenty observatories on Earth and in space (shown on this Earth map) made follow-up observations across the electromagnetic spectrum, including gamma-rays, X-rays, and optical and radio radiation. | |
