Stargazing by VLT telescopes. Clouds in the night sky obscure the Milky Way and the Moon. At centre are three of the four auxiliary telescopes of the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile's Atacama Desert. Operated by the ESO (European Southern Observatory), the VLT interferometer, one of the most powerful telescopes in the world, is located on Cerro Paranal at an altitude of 2600 metres. An ESO guide is lying on the ground in the foreground, observing the night sky. The Milky Way is our galaxy seen from the inside, forming a band of stars and nebulae stretching across the sky.
