Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the leaf of a tomato plant. The multi cellular stalked glandular trichomes are responsible for using chemicals to ward off insect attack. These unique structures are also responsible for the characteristic smell of a tomato leaf. The thorn like trichomes or leaf hairs also help in repelling insects. The elongated openings on the surface are the stomates, which regulate water loss by the plant. The filed of view of this image is 2 mm. | |
