Sodium ions flow into a cell during depolarization and activates sodium-hydrogen exchangers (red) to start transporting protons out of synaptic vesicles. The difference in electrical charge causes glutamate to enter the vesicle via VGLUT (purple). The build up of negative charge triggers more protons to enter the vesicle through V-ATPase (blue) and raise the internal pH. The result of this change in acidity causes dopamine to enter the vesicle through VMAT (orange), to finally be transported out of the neuron during a synapse.
