Coral reacts with acid. Corals consist of colonies of numerous very small animals called polyps. When polyps die, they secrete their exoskeletons of hard calcium carbonate (CaCo3). New polyps grow on top of the remains of former colonies. Over the years stony polyps can create massive coral reefs. Here a coral specimen is dropped into a beaker with 0.3 M hydrochloric acid (HCl). Carbon dioxide (CO2) bubbles are produced: CaCO3 + HCl -> CaCl2 + H2O + CO2. | |
