Scanning electron micrograph of Aspergillus fungus spores. Aspergillus is a genus consisting of a few hundred mould species found in various climates worldwide. Aspergillus is also common in the home, including bedding. Moulds are also called filamentous fungi. Only a few of these moulds can cause illness in humans and animals. Most people are naturally immune and do not develop a disease caused by Aspergillus. Aspergillus fumigatus is a fungus of the genus Aspergillus, and is one of the most common Aspergillus species to cause disease in individuals with an immunodeficiency. A. fumigatus, a saprotroph widespread in nature, is typically found in soil and decaying organic matter, such as compost heaps, where it plays an essential role in carbon and nitrogen recycling.
