The pineal gland is a small fluid-filled endocrine gland. It is an important structure located between the two hemispheres of the brain and posterior to the thalamus. This gland controls the release of melatonin, which is a hormone that induces sleep. When the eyes are exposed to light, the optic nerve signals the pineal glad to stop producing melatonin. This process allows the body to maintain it's sleep-wake cycle. | |
