Thermal decomposition of potassium chlorate, 1 of 4. 0.8 g of potassium chlorate (KClO3) is placed in a test tube with some manganese(IV) oxide (MnO2) as a catalyst. The test tube is heated by a propane Bunsen burner flame. The reaction is KClO3 -> O2 + KCl. Generated oxygen gas (O2) passes through tubing and is collected over water in an inverted jar (Photos 1 and 2). when the height of the water in the jar matches the level of water around it (Photo 3), ensuring that the pressure in the jar is equal to atmospheric pressure, the tubing is removed (Photo 4). | |
