Earthshine from waning crescent Moon at dawn. The bright crescent phase of the Moon is visible due to sunlight reflected from the Moon. The rest of the Moon is visible due to Earthshine, which is the fainter reflection of sunlight from the Earth to the Moon and back again. In the dimmer portion of the Moon, lunar maria (dark areas) are seen. This photograph was taken in twilight, a few minutes before sunrise. Photographed in 2018, above Monsaraz and Lake Alqueva, in the Dark Sky Alqueva Reserve, Portugal. | |
