Comet Giacobini-Zinner and M37 star cluster, optical image. M37 (right) is an open star cluster in the constellation of Auriga, around 4500 light years from Earth. Comets are icy bodies from the outer solar system that boil and form a bright tail of gas and dust as they approach the Sun. Comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner (left) is a short-period comet, appearing about every 6.6 years. Here, on 10 September 2018, the comet was near its perihelion and closest approach to Earth in 72 years, being only 58 million kilometres away.
