Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko from Rosetta. This comet is around 3.5 by 4 kilometres. This view shows part of the Nut and Serquet regions on the comet's smaller lobe and shows a mixture of fine dust and boulders. The European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft was launched in March 2004 on a 10 year mission to reach this comet. It entered orbit on 6 August 2014 at a point in the comet's orbit beyond the orbit of Mars. The first mission designed to land on a comet, it carried instruments and a lander to map and study the comet's surface and core. Image obtained on 2 September 2016 from 2.1 kilometres from the comet's surface by Rosetta's OSIRIS narrow-angle camera. | |
