Discovery of electricity in steam, 1841. 19th-century illustration of a steam locomotive worker receiving an electric shock from steam. As reported in 'The Literary Souvenir' in February 1841, a steam engine worker received an electric shock while holding a safety valve lever with one hand while an escaping jet of steam made contact with his other hand. Experiments were carried out by scientists that determined that electrostatic charge generated by jets of steam could accumulate under the right circumstances and produce electric arcs and sparks. The research also showed that this electrostatic charge could be collected and stored, and was produced in a similar way to the meteorological phenomenon of lightning. Artwork published in 1867. | |
