Cordaites were seed plants (gymnosperms) that appeared in the Late Mississippian and persisted into the Triassic (330-250 million years ago). They were a group of tree-like plants, now extinct, which grew up to 30 metres tall and had trunks up to 1 metre in diameter. They had separate branches to which narrow-elliptical or long and bladelike leaves were attached in whorls. The flowering ear of Cordaites in this specimen measures 150 mm, provenance unknown. | |
