Polarised light micrograph of a section of vegetable ivory. The endosperm of the seeds of certain palms is used to produce carved objects that resemble ivory carvings, providing an acceptable alternative to elephant ivory. These nuts were extensively used to produce buttons in the 1880s. Vegetable ivory or tagua nut is mainly the product of palms in the genus Phytelephas. Magnification: x136 at 10cm wide. | |
