MODEL RELEASED. Adult mumps. Close-up of the swollen neck of a 34-year-old female primary school teacher with mumps. Mumps is a highly contagious disease caused by infection with the mumps virus (Mumps rubulavirus). Signs and symptoms often include fever, muscle pain, headache, poor appetite, and feeling tired. This is then usually followed by painful swelling of one or both parotid salivary glands. It is more common in children than adults as once the infection has run its course, a person is typically immune for life. However, symptoms in adults are often more severe than in children. | |
