Experiments on oxygen by Priestley. 18th-century illustration of a set of experiments on oxygen described in volume 1 of the book 'Experiments and observations on different kinds of air' (1774-1777) by English chemist Joseph Priestley (1733-1804). Priestley discovered oxygen, overturning the phlogiston theory, publishing his findings in 1776. Scheele and Lavoisier are also credited with independently making the same discovery. Here, the illustration shows experiments testing different aspects of air and oxygen, and the production of oxygen from various reactions. | |
