Mass chart for black holes and neutron stars. Masses of stellar remnants are measured in many different ways. This graph shows the masses for: black holes detected by electromagnetic observations (purple); black hole mergers detected by gravitational-wave observations (blue, LIGO-Virgo detectors); neutron stars measured with electromagnetic observations (yellow); and neutron stars that merged in an event called GW170817, which were detected in gravitational waves (orange, LIGO-Virgo detectors). The remnant of GW170817 is unclassified, and labelled as a question mark. LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) consists of two sites in the USA. The Virgo interferometer is located in Italy. Chart published in 2017. | |
