Burning of hard wood in a stove was arrested by reduced air intake. Smouldering wood stopped burning and produced charcoal which cracked easily and produced smooth flat black particles. Under a scanning electron microscope, the shiny particles revealed lace-like structures with the original biological features including the tracheids of the wood carbonized but to a great extent preserved. Enhanced SEM. Image width: 320 micrometres. Magnification: 312x if the image is printed 10 cm wide. Bar: 50 micrometres. | |
