Molecular model of a catenane, a type of mechanically-interlocked molecular architecture. It is composed of two interlocked macrocycles (molecular rings). They are joined by mechanical rather than chemical bonds, which allow movement of the bonds relative to each other. The 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to the chemists Jean-Pierre Sauvage (b. 1944), Sir J. Fraser Stoddart (b. 1942) and Bernard Feringa (b. 1951) for their work on the design and synthesis of molecular machines. Sauvage's work on catenanes was published in 1983. | |
