Map of the Sargasso Sea. The Sargasso Sea is an area of the North Atlantic Ocean that is defined by the four ocean currents that border it. These are; the Gulf Stream to the west, the North Atlantic Current to the north, the Canary Current to the east and the North Atlantic Equatorial Current to the south. It is named for the mats of free-floating Sargassum seaweed found there. Due to the currents, a large amount of non-biodegradable waste, including plastics, is deposited in the Sargasso Sea and it is home to the North Atlantic Garbage Patch.
