Neck gland affected by metastatic melanoma in an 82-year-old man. The gland affected here is a submandibular gland (below the lower jaw bone or mandible). Melanomas are invasive cancers, and may spread to other parts of the body (metastasis). If this occurs, the prognosis is poor. If the cancer has not spread, surgical removal may effect a cure. Melanomas are the most dangerous form of skin cancer. The lymph nodes and other glands are commonly affected by cancer as it spreads (metastasizes) from its primary site. | |
