Peacock. The male Indian peafowl (Pavo cristatus) is renowned for its spectacular tail used in sexual display. Its feathers are iridescent and on the neck and body these are predominantly blue. Crystalline lattice structures on the feather fibres, in conjunction with colour pigments, reflect back only light in the blue part of the spectrum. These immensely complex photonic crystal fibres produce structural coloration. Different structures produce different colours. Photographed in Lille zoo, France. | |
