Milton reading 'Paradise Lost'. 19th-century illustration of a blind Milton reading 'Paradise Lost' (1667) to his daughters. The English poet and political writer John Milton (1608-1674), who went completely blind by 1654, is best known as the author of the celebrated epic poems 'Paradise Lost' (1667) and 'Paradise Regained' (1671). This scene is part of the descriptions of the theories of Swiss theologist Johann Kaspar Lavater (1741-1801). Lavater is best known for popularising the pseudoscience of physiognomy, the practice of assessing personality traits from the appearance of a person's face. He published his work in 'Physiognomische Fragmente zur Beforderung der Menschenkenntnis und Menschenliebe' (1775-1778). This artwork was published in 1844. | |
