This sagittal (from the side) CT image shows a hemicraniectomy defect which was a life preserving procedure in this person with a large underlying cerebral infarction (stroke). Note the sunken flap appearance which can occur because the underlying brain is now experiencing the effects of atmospheric pressure on it which is normally not felt when the brain is enclosed by the rigid skull. | |
