Before replication one chromosome consists of one DNA double helix molecule. But after replication, which is required for cell division, each chromosome consists of two identical DNA molecules. These two newly copied DNA molecules form two chromatids. During cell division one chromatid is transferred to one daughter cell, and the second identical chromatid - to the other. When these two chromatids are separated from each other, they become the new chromosomes. | |
