Lay the infant out on your forearm, with your arm in a downward inclination (if needed, support your arm on your thigh). Your hand should support the head, holding it firmly at the jaw. Tap the child five times on the back with the palm of your hand, between the shoulder blades. Then turn the child, keeping the head lower than the trunk, and use two fingers to apply slight pressure (about 1/2 inch, or 1, 2 cm) five times on the sternum. This is where the ribs meet, at the center of the rib cage. Repeat the steps until the foreign body is dislodged. |
