U.S. One cent piece or penny cut in half to show that it is made of zinc (Zn) plated with copper (Cu). In 1982 the US Mint switched from making pennies out of solid brass (95% copper, 5% Zinc) to copper-plated zinc, as the price of the copper in a penny had risen well above one cent. This is a Union Shield cent, minted from 2010 to the present. | |
