Coronal (frontal) brain fMRI obtained while the subject was lip smacking. This task is inherently bilateral in nature and it generates BOLD (blood oxygen level dependent) activation (orange blobs) straddling the central sulcus, predominantly involving the posterior pre-central gyrus and some of the anterior post central gyrus. Note that the BOLD activation is located more inferiorly over the lateral convexity of the hemispheres compared with foot motor and hand motor function. frgs = superior frontal gyrus, heg = Heschl's gyrus, frgm = middle frontal gyrus, frss = superior frontal sulcus, sf = sylvian fissure, sma = supplementary motor region | |
