Microcephaly is a medical condition in which the brain does not develop properly resulting in a smaller than normal head. Microcephaly may be present at birth or it may develop in the first few years of life. Often people with the disorder have an intellectual disability, poor motor function, poor speech, abnormal facial features, seizures, and dwarfism. Infants can suffer from congenital microcephaly if their mothers were infected with the Zika virus while pregnant. The Zika virus is a mosquito-borne flavivirus closely related to the dengue virus. Transmission primarily occurs via bites from the Aedes aegypti mosquito. | |
