Ammonia dissolves copper sulphide. Dark-green solid copper sulphide (CuS) in a test tube dissolves in a 5.8M solution of ammonia (NH4OH). The resulting solution has an intense blue colour due to formation of tetraamminecopper (II) complex ion (( (Cu (NH3)4)2+). The reaction can be written as CuS + NH4OH -> (Cu (NH3)4)S + H2O. | |
