Miscibility. Left test tube contains ethanol and water. They are both polar solvents and are miscible. When they are mixed together they form a homogeneous solution. Right test tube contains dichloromethane and water. Dichloromethane is a non-polar organic solvent and is not miscible with water. Water floats on top of dichloromethane without mixing, as it has a lower density than dichloromethane. Here some copper sulphate (CuSO4) has been added to water for better visual contrast. Since copper sulphate is an ionic compound, it dissolves in polar water but not in non-polar dichloromethane. | |
