Adding methylene blue to a solution of dextrose and KOH, and then shaking the flask containing dextrose, KOH, and methylene blue increases the amount of dissolved oxygen in the beaker. The indicator thus returns to its blue form. After it rests, the dextrose reduces the indicator back to a colourless form. It is therefore called a reducing sugar.
