Endothermic reaction, image 1 in a series of 2. Dissolution of ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) in water is an endothermic reaction, i.e. the energy is absorbed from the surroundings: NH4NO3 -> (NH4)+ + (NO3)-. Here water is added to Erlenmeyer flask that contains solid ammonium nitrate (Photo 1). The flask stands on a wooden plate, with few drops of water added between them. After ammonium nitrate is dissolved, the temperature drops low enough for water to freeze and the wood sticks to the flask (Photo 2). | |
