Methanol oxidation. Oxidation of a primary alcohol (methanol, CH3OH) by potassium dichromate (VI) (K2Cr2O7). In the process chromium is reduced from +6 oxidation state to +3 oxidation state. This is physically observed as a colour change from orange to green to blue. Here 0.4 mL of 0.23M solution of potassium dichromate acidified with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) was added to a test tube with 6.5 mL of methanol. This photo was taken 2 hours after the start of the reaction. A test tube with 0.25 M solution of potassium dichromate (VI) (left, orange) is included as a reference. | |
