Isopropanol oxidation. Oxidation of a secondary alcohol (isopropanol, C3H7OH) by potassium dichromate (VI) (K2Cr2O7). In the process chromium is reduced from +6 oxidation state to +3 oxidation state. This is physically observed as a colour change from orange to green to blue. Here 0.4 mL of 0.23M solution of potassium dichromate acidified with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) was added to a test tube with 6.5 mL of isopropanol. The reaction rate was slow. Left frame was taken at the start, centre frame - after 1 hour and right frame - after 9.5 hours. A test tube with 0.25 M solution of potassium dichromate (VI) (left, orange) is included as a reference. | |
