| Aluminium reacts with sulfuric acid, 3 of 3. Aluminium (Al) coil is placed in a test tube with concentrated (18M) sulfuric acid (H2SO4) at room temperature. The acid first reacts with aluminium oxide (Al2O3) layer that protects the metal: Al2O3 + H2SO4 -> Al2 (SO4)3 + H2O. This reaction is not very evident, it appears that not much is happening initially (Photo 1). After several minutes, hydrogen gas (H2) bubbles start to appear (Photo 2): Al + H2SO4 -> Al2 (SO4)3 + H2. The reaction becomes more vigorous after that (Photo 3). This is an example of a single displacement reaction. | |
