Scaly Rustgill (Gymnopilus sapineus). Orange mushroom 1-2 inches across x 1-2 inches high. Umbo present in young, flattening to wavy surface and smooth margin. Stipe orange. Grows singly or in small clusters. Saint Petersburg, Florida. Boyd Hill Nature Center. August. Gymnopilus sapineus, commonly known as Scaly Rustgill, is a small and widely distributed mushroom which grows in dense clusters on dead conifer wood. It has a rusty orange spore print and a bitter taste. It is unclear at this time whether this species or its relatives contain the hallucinogen psilocybin. | |
