Isopods are crustaceans that are related to shrimp and crabs. Isopods of the genus Caecidotea can be common in subterranean waters in North America. In some systems they constitute a significant portion of the total biomass present. They brood their young below their bodies -- as is depicted here. This is a species that was observed in a Tennessee cave in the Appalachians. It is an obligate groundwater inhabitant and serves as an important member of the food web in the subterranean system where it is found. | |
