NGC 457 is a beautiful open cluster in Cassiopeia that is known by the popular names of the Owl Cluster, Dragonfly, or ET Cluster, from the movie ET, The Extra-Terrestrial. The two brightest stars in this image, Phi-1 and Phi-2 Cassiopeiae, are magnitude 5 and 7 respectively, and comprise the eyes of the Owl. NGC 457 is located two degrees south-southwest of Ruchbah (Delta Cassiopeiae). It was discovered in 1787 by William Herschel. It has an apparent diameter of 13 arcminutes and an apparent magnitude of 6.4. It lies 8, 000 light-years away and is estimated to be 21 million years old. | |
